Lyman C. Flanders Civil War Letter

Abstract

This collection consists of a Civil War Letter written by Lyman C. Flanders on April 26, 1864, from Knoxville. In the letter, Flanders asked his friend Huntington to go to Captain Mills' office to retrieve a favorite pistol taken from him at the Chattanooga Depot.

Marquis D. L. Burnett Military Discharge Certificate

This certificate indicates that Marquis D. L. Burnett of Knoxville, Tennessee, who served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 5th Regiment of the East Tennessee Infantry Volunteers, was honorably discharged. It is a replacement for his original discharge papers, which were issued on August 3, 1862.

Murphy and Robinson Letter

Collection consists of a short letter written on the letterhead for Murphy and Robinson, a Knoxville, Tenn., dealer of hats, caps and straw goods. The letter, dated November 2, 1899, reads in part, "I have sold over $200.00 worth of them this year. Everything is moving along nicely. Musikalische 5 Cent Collection Songbook

Abstract

This collection consists of a single German-language songbook entitled Musikalische 5 Cent Collection most likely dating from 1883. It provides the lyrics and music for three songs: Das Weihnachts=Licht (The Christmas Light), Wenn der Herr die Gefangenen Zions erloefen wird (When the Lord Delivers Zion's Captives) and Fortfestung (A Mighty Fortress). The final two pieces constitute a musical setting of Psalm 126. This copy was printed in Knoxville, Tennessee by Tilghman Haws.

Newman Circle Minute Book

Abstract

This journal records the biweekly meetings of the Newman Circle, a women’s club that met in Knoxville. It opens with the course of study and list of officers for the 1922-23 school year before beginning the minutes for January 2, 1923. There are no records for the 1924-25 school year, and the last record is for May 22, 1928. Most of the officers changed each year, but the directors continued to be Miss Kate White and Mrs. L. E. Vedder.
